The University of Minnesota Duluth softball team was swept by Winona State University Monday in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at the RCTC Dome In Rochester, Minn. by scores of 7-2 and 3-2.

Game 1 (7-2, WSU Win)

In the opening game, UMD took the first lead in the top of the first inning when Kiana Bender scored on a wild pitch. But the Warriors equalized in the bottom of the second and then broke the game open with four runs in the fourth to go up 5-1. After Julia Gronholz homered – her first of the season –  to make it 5-2 in the top of the fifth, WSU added two runs in the bottom part of the inning and forced pitcher Lauren Dixon out of the game after one batter in the inning.

Dixon threw six strikeouts in the game but was on the hook for six runs and was tagged with the loss. Maddy Walsh pitched a little over two innings and faced nine batters. Gronholz was the lone Bulldog to post multiple hits in the game, going 2-of-3 in the game.

Game 2 (3-2, WSU Win)

The Warriors Sam Keller hit a home run in the bottom of the third, but Kate Mohr answered with a home run of her own – her first of the season – in the top of the fourth that also scored Gronholz for the 2-1 lead. WSU retook the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with two runs scored, and held UMD scoreless in its last at bat to secure the sweep.

Alyssa Williams had the loss from the mound but split pitching duties with Walsh. Williams faced 12 batters, struck out one and allowed two hits, while Walsh faced 12 and struckout three with one run allowed. Bender was 3-of-3 in the game from the plate to lead the Bulldogs.

UMD (19-8, 0-2) is scheduled to host Augustana University this Friday on Junction Field in Duluth, Minn., but given current weather conditions, that doubleheader will most likely be moved. Follow www.UMDBulldogs.com for the latest schedule changes.
