UMD Soccer Set for NSIC Tournament First Round Matchup Against No. 1 Seed SCSU
The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team takes on St. Cloud State University on Monday, Nov. 6 in the first round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament.
The No. 8 seed Bulldogs officially secured their playoff spot last Thursday, when Wayne State University lost 3-0 to Winona State University. That same night, the Huskies celebrated their first NSIC Regular Season Title .
UMD and SCSU matched up twice this season, with the Huskies winning the series. Their most recent face off was a one-goal game. The Bulldogs were down 2-0 at half time, but fought back after the break. UMD outshot SCSU in the second half and sophomore Miriam Marsan scored a late goal to close the gap.
At the end of the regular season, both teams had three players who reached double digits in points. Bulldog senior Jackie Jares leads both rosters with 22 points (8-6-22). Huskies freshman Linsey Trapino (17) and sophomores Ellie Primerano (16) and Brook Quam (14) follow. Jares' teammates, junior Anna Tobias and Marsan, round out the point leaders with 12 each.
Underclassmen haven't just been part of SCSU's offensive production this season. UMD's Myra Moorjani (3-1-7) made her presence felt again in her second season and freshman Jessica Eischens (2-2-6) started 17 games in her first as a Bulldog.
In net, the Huskies have started freshman Jaylee Strickland in all but one game this season. The same goes for UMD's Jennifer Norris. Both goalkeepers have 1,530 minutes of play time logged. The SCSU freshman standout will be across the field from an experienced goaltender, with four seasons under her belt.
UMD last made the postseason in 2017, when they faced off against Minnesota State Mankato in the first round. The game was tied 1-1 after three overtimes and ultimately ended in a shootout loss.
The Huskies most recently made the NSIC Tournament in 2021. However, it ended quickly with a 2-1 loss to Augustana University and a first-round exit. This is their first regular season championship and their program has never won the NSIC Tournament. The Bulldogs have five previous conference championships.
UMD kicks off the tournament at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6 in St. Cloud.
