Soccer Ties Winona State 3-3, Continues Playoff Pursuit

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team had a late start against Winona State University due to inclement weather, and came away with a 3-3 tie tonight. The Bulldogs earned a point in conference standings, moving them up to fourth alongside Augustana and Northern State.

Both teams had deep offensive rushes early, but were unable to get shots off. WSU's first official shot on goal came ten minutes into the game and turned into a goal. Soon after, UMD sent a free kick towards the net. The shot was on-frame, but WSU's goaltender made a leaping save to keep the lead.

The teams traded the ball back and forth at center field, until it got through to Jackie Jares. She broke away, but a trailing Warrior made a sliding tackle and eliminated Jares' scoring chance.

Thirty minutes into the first half, the Warriors attempted to kick the ball out of their zone. It only got as far as Sarah Stange at the 20 yard line, who immediately sent the ball back and into the net. Stange scored the Bulldogs first of the game and her first of the season, tying it 1-1.

The Bulldogs had an offensive zone throw in just thirty seconds later. Myra Moojani was positioned perfectly in front of the net to head in the flying ball, giving UMD the go-ahead.

At the start of the second half, Jennifer Norris made a rushing save and Rachel Boelke followed with a defensive header to tip the ball away, but WSU captured the rebound and scored. Norris and the UMD defense continued to make stops afterwards.

A Warrior goal kick led to a foul called on the Bulldogs and a dangerously positioned free kick. WSU converted, sending their third into the UMD net and regaining the lead for the first time in 35 minutes.

The Bulldogs weren't done yet, however. From a distance, UMD sent the ball into the back of the net, this time with Miriam Marsan. Energy was high as the Bulldogs got a free kick soon after, but three successive stops from WSU blocked any chance at a UMD lead.

The Bulldogs made several additional attempts, including a last second shot, but the game ended 3-3. This marked their sixth tie of the season.

UMD plays in their final regular season game next week, taking on Bemidji State on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
