BULLDOGS COME UP SHORT IN FLORIDA STINT FINAL WITH EAGLES

The University of Minnesota Duluth Baseball program finished out its stint in Florida with a loss to the #6 Ashland University Eagles. The Bulldogs fin2ish out the RussMatt Invitational going 2-4 and now sit at 3-5 overall on the year, while Ashland is 3-1 at the tournament and 8-2 overall on the season.

The University of Minnesota Duluth Baseball program finished out its stint in Florida with a loss to the #6 Ashland University Eagles. The Bulldogs fin2ish out the RussMatt Invitational going 2-4 and now sit at 3-5 overall on the year, while Ashland is 3-1 at the tournament and 8-2 overall on the season.
 
UMD finished the day with two runs, grabbing nine hits with one error and 13 left on base. The Eagles finished with nine runs, grabbing 14 hits with no errors and 12 left on base.
 
Scoring wouldn't start until the third inning when AU got on the board for two. They would score when Aust Eifrid reached on a fielder's choice with one away. He moved to second when Hayd Kissel singled down the left field lune. They both moved up on a walk and would both score on a single down the left field line by Loga Stoldt, who grabbed two runs batted in (RBI).
 
It wasn't until the fourth that the Eagles struck again. Seth Schroeder singled to center and would move up on a bunt by Ale Whipple, followed by a fielder's choice in which Eifrid reached as well. Schroeder scored when Kissel walked. Eifrid and Whipple would both score off of a single to right field by Micah Allen, AU a 5-0 lead.
 
Two more would come across in the seventh when Schroeder and Ga Robberts crossed on a fielding error. The Eagles would manage to score two more runs, one in the sixth and one more in the eighth.
 
UMD would come to life and get on the board in their final at bats when sophomore second baseman Tim Pokornowski managed to get on with a double to right field. He would move up when freshman short stop Alex Wattermann singled. Pokornowski came across after sophomore designated hitter Tyler Peterson knocked one into right field. Wattermann would come across when senior right fielder Chris Saltzmann knocked one into left field.
 
The Bulldogs ended up bringing in five pitchers in the contest. Freshman pitcher Alex Sturnieks (0-1) was tabbed with the loss, the first of his career. Sturnieks finished with 3.1 innings pitched, dealing one strikeout, with two walks, seven hits and five earned runs. Freshman pitcher Austin Manuel made his debut on the bump, doing 2.0 innings of work with two hits, one strikeout and one walk. Junior pitcher Eric Hinnenkamp finished the day with 1.2 innings. He would deal out two strikeouts, give three walks with three hits and two runs (no earned runs).
 
Wattermann finished with two hits on the board in five at-bats with one run on the day. Junior outfielder Henry George grabbed a hit in four at-bats on the day. Sophomore designated hitter Tosten Mann, Peterson, Saltzmann, Senior first baseman Alex Welder, freshman pinch hitter Trevor Gustafson and Pokornowski all finished with a base hit. Saltzmann finished with an RBI, and Pokornowski would finish with a run.
 
The Bulldogs will open up Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season play with four games this coming weekend, taking place in St. Paul against Concordia-St. Paul on Sat. and Sun (Mar. 14 & 15).
