BULLDOGS TAKE ONE OF TWO IN FLORDIA DOUBLEHEADER WITH WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball program continued its stint in Florida with a split doubleheader against Wayne State University on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the first game in come back fashion 5-4, and would drop the second game 7-1. UMD now sits at 3-4 on the year while WSU improves to 9-3.

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball program continued its stint in Florida with a split doubleheader against Wayne State University on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs won the first game in come back fashion 5-4, and would drop the second game 7-1. UMD now sits at 3-4 on the year while WSU improves to 9-3.
 
UMD would grab five runs on five hits while commiting no errors in the first game, while the Warriors put four runs across with eight hits and two errors.
 
Scoring would start right away for the Warriors, grabbing two runs in the first inning. They would put a runner on early in the bottom of the inning with a hit through short. He would move to third off of a single to center field and score on fielders choice. They would put another run across when they singled to center to grab a 2-0 lead early.
 
The Bulldogs would tie things in their next at bats, when senior first baseman Alex Welder singled to left, advancing to second when sophomore outfielder Tim Pokornowski got on by way of hit by pitch. The pair moved up when senior catcher Reid Rubio bunted them both over. Welder would score on a pass ball and Pokornowski came across when freshman infielder Alex Watterman singled to right field.
 
UMD would take the lead in the fifth when junior outfielder Henry George got on by getting plunked. He would steal second and move to third when senior outfielder Drew Stewart got on by means of error. Sophomore designated hitter Tosten Mann singled to right, scoring George.
 
WSU would counter in their half of the inning with a homer to tie things at three a side.
 
The Warriors would take the lead in the sixth when a runner got on with a single to right. He would advance to third after a hit by pitch and a sac bunt. He would come around to score on a sacrifice fly.
 
The Bulldogs would take the lead in the final frame when Watterman got on by a walk, and was brought around when Stewart managed bring him home off an inside the park homerun.
 
Senior pitcher Rece Dietrich (1-0) was tabbed with the win, going 6.0 innings with four strikeouts, seven hits and no walks, giving up four earned runs. Junior pitcher Liam Blaschko was tasked with one inning of work, and managed to snag a save in the process.
 
Stewart finished with two runs batted in, a hit and a run. Mann would grab an RBI as well, with a hit along the way. Watterman finished with an RBI, a hit, walk and a run. George finished with a run and a hit.
 
In the second game, UMD managed to score one with eight hits and three errors, while WSU would bring seven across with six hits and no errors.
 
The Warriors struck in the top of the second with a two RBI double with two outs, with batters getting on by means of hit by pitch and a walk.
 
They would score again when they singled to center, moving up to second on a steal and advancing to third on a throwing error. He would come around to score when a pick-off attempt failed, giving WSU a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.
 
The Warriors scored three more in the fourth when the bases were loaded and a single found its way into left field, which would bring two more runs across. They brought a third run in by means of a fielder's choice.
 
UMD got on the board in the sixth inning when sophomore pinch hitter Tyler Peterson hammered a shot over the left field fence, but that was all the Bulldogs were able to muster in the contest.
 
Peterson finished with a homer, giving him a base hit with an RBI. George finished with a hit in the contest, while junior first baseman Mitchel Waletzki grabbed two hits himself with two walks.
 
In his collegiate debut, freshman pitcher Russ Tanner (0-1) was tabbed with the loss doing 3.2 innings of work with five strikeouts, four walks and five earned runs. Sophomore pitcher Aaron Wukmir finished the game out, doing 3.1 innings of work. He would finish with two strikeouts, two hits and one earned run.
 
The Bulldogs finish out their trip in Florida with a single game against Ashland University at 5:30 PM.
