BULLDOGS FALL TO LAKERS IN DOUBLE HEADER IN RUSSMATT TOURNAMENT

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball program fell in a double with Grand Valley State University 7-4 and 5-0. The Bulldogs now sit at 2-3 on the season after both games and 1-2 in the RussMatt Invite, while the Lakers are now 8-2 on the year.

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball program fell in a double with Grand Valley State University 7-4 and 5-0. The Bulldogs now sit at 2-3 on the season after both games and 1-2 in the RussMatt Invite, while the Lakers are now 8-2 on the year.
 
UMD would finish game one with four runs on nine hits while committing one error, and the second contest with no runs on three hits with no errors. Grand Valley State finished the first game with seven runs on nine hits and no errors and the second game with five runs on 11 hits and one error.
 
Scoring would commence in the second inning with GVSU scoring first. The Lakers scored when Nathan Bonter got on base after grounding into a fielders choice. He would steal second and move to third on a single through the left side. He came in to score after Stephen Pim bunted him in to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Bulldogs struck in the third when sophomore infielder Tosten Mann reached after striking out but running out the dropped ball. He moved to second on a wild pitch and senior outfielder Chris Saltzmann reached on a walk. Senior first baseman Alex Welder followed up with a frozen rope homer to put UMD ahead 3-1.
 
UMD found another run in the fifth with Saltzmann doubled to right field and Welder followed with a single that got through on the left side, scoring Saltzmann.
 
The Lakers found their way back into the game after putting one run across in the sixth off a single and a run batted in, and would tie things at four a side when sophomore pitcher Brodie Paulson surrendered two runs with two outs on the board. They would strike just a few batters later when Bonter ripped one through on the right side with the bases ;loaded, scoring all three and taking a 7-4 lead and not looking back, taking the win.
 
Welder finished with a three run homer, four RBI's, one run and three hits. Saltzmann finished with a double, two hits and crossed home plate twice. Mann finished with a hit and a run. Paulson had a double.
 
Paulson (0-1) took the loss on the day, finishing with one inning pitched, giving up two hits and two earned runs. Junior pitcher Paul Petit started the day, finishing with 5.2 innings pitched, striking out six with six hits and no walks, giving up two earned runs. Freshman pitcher Alex Sturnieks made his pitching debut, facing two batter, giving up one hit with no earned runs.
 
UMD would threaten right away in the first inning of the second game, loading the bases with two walks and a single by Mann. Nothing would come to fruition as the Bulldogs would take to the field for the bottom of the inning.
 
GVSU would score in the bottom of the third inning when Christian Faust walked and Anthony Cocco walked to move him up. Bonter would single to left and score both runners. They would strike again in the fourth when Connor Grice singled to right center. Cocco walked and moved him up to second and Ryan Blake-Jones drove him home with a single. Bonter would drive in Cocco in the next at bat with a single to right center.
 
The Lakers scored their fifth run in the fifth inning when Anthony Fleischauer singled to begin the inning, and was replaced for Blake Vershum to run. Vershum was moved over by a sacrifice bunt followed by advancing on a groundout. He came around to score off of a single by Faust.
 
Junior outfielder Henry George finished the game with a base hit and a walk. Freshman catcher Trevor Gustafson finished with his first career collegiate hit. Mann got the final hit of the evening game. Senior outfielder Drew Stewart and freshman infielder Alex Watterman also drew walks.
 
Junior pitcher Mitchell Waletzki (1-1) started the game on the mound and was tagged with the loss. He pitched 3.2 innings, striking out six with five walks, seven hits and four earned runs. Junior Pitcher Eric Hinnenkamp finished the jump, working 2.1 innings with four hits and one earned run.
 
UMD takes Saturday off and returns to action on Sunday with a doubleheader against Wayne State University at 9:30 and 11:30 AM.
