Bulldog Baseball Fends Off the Wolves in Game One of Three Game Series
The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball team started off a three game series with the Northern State University Wolves with an action packed win in another weekend full of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) matchups.
Final Score: UMD (8) - NSU (6)
The Wolves put together back to back extra base hits to open up the game and tally the first run early in the top of the first. An early groundout for the first out of the inning would drive in a second run for NSU to take a 2-0 lead before the end of the half inning. Michael Gabbard would connect on a leadoff single to start the game for the Bulldogs, and eventually be driven in by a Gabe Richardson double straight up the middle to cut the NSU lead to one before UMD would go down on two straight flyouts to end the first. The Wolves would go scoreless in the top of the second to bring the Bulldogs back up to the plate, giving Trevor Gustafson the chance to tie the game up at 2-2 on a solo moonshot over the wall.
NSU would get runners into scoring position to leadoff the top of the third inning, leading to a bases clearing single up the first base line to make the score 4-2 in the favor of the Wolves. However, Ethan Cole would not let the runs go unanswered as he would connect on a three run shot and put UMD back out in front. NSU would come back with a collection of base hits to start off the fourth to tie the game back up at 5-5 .
Gabbard would drive a double into the center field grass to score Gustafson in the bottom of the sixth after he reached on a leadoff walk. Oran Hinkle would tally on another run for the Dogs, scoring Gabbard from second base with a base hit, giving UMD a 7-5 lead going into the final three innings. UMD would stay ahead by two after each team would trade run for run in the seventh inning. Both teams would go scoreless to end the game and the Bulldogs would secure their third win in a row to start off their series against NSU.
