
Announcing UMD’s new Associate Vice President for Philanthropy
Julia Diggins, a proven leader with nearly 20 years in higher education, has been named associate vice president for philanthropy at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD).
“Julia brings tremendous energy, experience, and passion to this role,” UMD Chancellor Charles T. Nies, PhD, said. “The University has an amazing story, and we are fortunate to have such great partners with a strong spirit of giving to support our efforts. I am looking forward to Julia’s contributions as we continue to elevate UMD through her role as associate vice president for philanthropy.”
In this position, Diggins will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team at UMD, and will lead the institution’s division of University Advancement and Alumni Relations, which currently includes the offices of university fundraising and development, corporate engagement, annual giving, and alumni affairs. She brings a wealth of experience to the University of Minnesota, including serving two years as interim president and vice chancellor for university advancement during her time at a previous institution. She is also an active member of her community and a nationally engaged professional in higher education advancement.

Diggins comes to UMD from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where she received her degree and has spent her nearly 20-year career working in student affairs and development. She currently serves as the vice president of development.
Her position with the University of Minnesota represents a partnership with the University of Minnesota Foundation. Diggins will be based in Duluth and will support the philanthropic efforts and priorities of UMD.
Diggins’ appointment takes effect December 29, 2025.
