CEHSP faculty spotlight: Lynda John

CEHSP faculty spotlight: Lynda John baume050 Meet Lynda John, a UMD alumna and longtime instructor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders

When did you start at UMD? Why did you choose to work at UMD?

I started at UMD in the Fall of 1993, part-time. I received my undergrad and graduate degrees from UMD in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. I was a nontraditional student, coming back when my daughters were young. I chose this profession after my daughter had speech therapy.

When I was asked if I would consider working in the clinic during a supervisor's maternity leave, I was excited to come back.  And I have been fortunate enough to have stayed!

What do you like most about your job?

I love the energy of the students. They challenge me. Our clients in the clinic are amazing. I learn so much from them. I work with the best group of people. I couldn't ask for better colleagues! Even though I am certainly of retirement age have no desire to do so.

What is your research and/or teaching focus?

I like working with persons of all ages and disorders. There are always new things to learn about in this profession. I find it exciting to add new skills and knowledge. I love sharing what our clinic and department do to enhance our community and take advantage of these opportunities. I've worked in both medical and educational settings and bring these experiences to my current job.

What do you hope to impart to your students?

I hope that the students I work with will feel the joy I have doing this work. And that they will also feel this. While there are days when getting out of bed is not the easiest, I am always happy to come to the RFP Clinic!

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to read and do some sewing. I have six grandchildren and love to watch their sports—hockey, basketball, crew and snowboarding!—and just spend time with them and with my children. We love to vacation together!
