BULLDOGS STRING TOGETHER 14 RUNS TO ROLL PAST OILERS TO OPEN FLORIDA STINT

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball program opened its Florida stint with a win over the University of Findlay on Thursday morning 14-9. The Bulldogs have improved to 2-1 on the season while the University of Findlay has fallen to 4-6 on their year.

The University of Minnesota Duluth baseball program opened its Florida stint with a win over the University of Findlay on Thursday morning 14-9. The Bulldogs have improved to 2-1 on the season while the University of Findlay has fallen to 4-6 on their year.
 
UMD managed to string together 12 hits on the day, putting 14 across on the board while only committing four errors. Findlay strung 12 hits as well, but were only able to put nine across home plate while committing six errors on the day.
 
It only took until the second inning to get things rolling for the Bulldogs, when junior infielder Brodie Paulson got on base with a walk and would eventually come around to score when Findlay's third baseman made a throwing error. UMD would bring two more around when freshman infielder Alex Watterman singled into right, scoring senior infielder Anders Brown and senior catcher Reid Rubio. Watterman would come around to score when senior outfielder Drew Stewart doubled into right field.
 
The Bulldogs would relinquish the three run lead by giving up three in the bottom of the second, but would take a one run lead in the fourth when junior outfielder Henry George walked to open the inning, followed by a failed pickoff attempt that saw George advance to third. He would come across home when senior outfielder Chris Saltzmann managed to get an infield hit.
 
UMD would strike again in the sixth inning when Stewart walked to get on base before advancing on a wild pitch. He would come around to score when sophomore designated hitter Tosten Mann lined a base hit into left. Saltzmann followed with double that was roped into right field, moving Mann to third. Senior first baseman Alex Welder followed with a walk and everyone moved up a base on a wild pitch, which would score Mann. Sophomore pinch runner (for Saltzmann) Tim Pokornowski would score when Paulson popped a sacrifice fly out to the left fielder.
 
UMD would score again in the seventh when Watterman reached base on a fielder's choice, later coming around to score when Stewart reached on a fielder's choice of his own and a throwing error from the shortstop allowed Watterman to cross home safely.
 
Paulson would cross the plate in the eighth inning when he was hit by a pitch to get put on base. Rubio followed with a hit by pitch as well. Paulson would score when sophomore infielder Frankie Cistaro struck one to right field. Watterman and Cistaro scored later when George frozen roped one into right center.
 
UMD would score two more in the final frame. Pokornowski would draw a walk, advancing to second on a hit to left by Welder and moving to third on a fielding error. Pokornowski would come across the plate when Welder stole second and the catching made a throwing error while Welder moved to third. He would score when Rubio reached first on a throwing error by the third baseman.
 
George finished with two runs batted in (RBI), grabbing a double and crossing the plate once. Watterman finished with two RBI's, getting one hit with three runs. Saltzmann garnerd an RBI, gathering three hits with a double. Mann grabbed an RBI, getting two hits on the day.
 
Sophomore pitcher Ben Shepard was tabbed with the win, piecing together five innings, striking out five, giving up five hits and four runs with two walks. Sophomore pitcher Aaron Wukmir worked in 1.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts giving up three hits. Junior pitcher Liam Blaschko finished out the game, putting together 2.2 innings. He would give up four hits with two runs, striking out five with no walks.
 
The Bulldogs take to the field tomorrow afternoon with a double header against Grand Valley State University at 4 and 6 PM (EST).
